Internet Explorer 7 Sucks

Posted Oct 22, 18:56

Due to my own curiosity and the fact that, as a web developer, I have to test against all major browsers, I have test Internet Explorer 7 on the family Windows computer, and I have to say: It still sucks. Why, you ask? Well…

Interface

  • Tab switching is s-l-o-w, and in the time it takes to open a new tab in IE7, I can open about 5 in Firefox.
  • Annoying click sound each time a webpage loads.
  • EOLAS lawsuit compliance means that you have to first click on most flash objects in order to be able to interact with them.
  • The favorites center is much less fast and simple to use than the bookmark menu
  • No inline search

Rendering Engine

  • No SVG
  • No display:table, etc.
  • No display:inline-block for block-level elements
  • No :first-child
  • No ACID2
  • Loads of other stuff

Miscallenea

  • Horrible extension directory with low-quality to suspect spyware addons, many of which cost money and/or are actually intended for IE6.
  • It only runs on Windows
  • Requires WGA and two restarts to install
  • Unintuitive configuration screen
  • No usercontent.css, so I can’t use my customized digg stylesheet
  • No greasemonkey extension available at this point
  • No free Adblock equivalent available at this point

In my work I have to use IE to access some security-related websites to update. ( No, I’m not joking! ) Last week, My hard drive died, and our tech guys had me up and running in a couple of days. After a half day reloading my backups from dvds, I set out to refresh the password/key pairs that are used by the secure sites (these are ftp sites btw). The webpages that setup the encryption keys only work with IE, and all extensively use Javascript.

So the rebuilt system used IE7. Okay.. I fire up IE7, type in the url and am instantly greeted by a modal warning box about javascript. after clicking Ok on about 25 or so of these boxes, the page displays, and as soon as I start to enter my name…. Bang.. Another stupid warning box.

So I decide that this really sucks and waste about a hour trying to turn off the warning. Never could find a setting that actually disabled the warning short of using windows firewall, which , when used with our office firewall blocks 100% of the network traffic… Well at least it’s secure..

Ok, so I disabled the windows firewall, went back to the security site, and about 250 stupid warning boxes later, I finally completed the form. clicked the submit button and IE7 completely seized up. No keyboard, no mouse response nothing..nada.. dead as a doornail. I actually had to unplug the power from the computer to get it to reboot because the soft power switch didn’t even respond.

Just incase this was a fluke, I tried agan with the same results. So I called our tech support guys, and one of them said ‘unstall IE7” and use IE6 instead”. So i tried that and everything worked Ok.

Except for the IE specific crap, I normally use Opera as my preferred browser.

Yep, Internet 7.0 sucks! I’m back to Internet 6.0. When Windows prompted me to install Internet 7.0, because of security issues, I thought, ‘Of course I want the most secure browser available,’ with all the virus junk out there, so I downloaded and installed Internet 7.0.

    Bad decision!

You would think Microsoft would be improving its product, with all the personnel and money it has, but, nooooooooo, IE7 is at least one step backwards in functionality. Who are the geeks who designed it?!! And the managers who approved it??!

If you don’t have a lot of RAM, or you’re on a fairly “old” (three years or older) computer, IE7 clogs it. That won’t help you at work! My computer was running very slowly with IE7. It has to be the worst IE “upgrade” I can recall since IE4. Did this ever have a beta version or is this new one the beta??

The Favorites Menu has been reworked to look more organized and help you stay organized, but it won’t even accept all your bookmarks. I bookmarked a usenet group and went to look for it, and it wasn’t even there! (Does “alt.” or any dot in the name get blocked?!) Tried again. Still not there.

If you like to customize your browser layout with Links in the top corner, or something like that, it may not work in IE7. So now it takes even longer or more clicks to visit sites you regularly visit. This is not intuitive.

I don’t know if the “security” feature is so helpful. I used to upload files to websites by ftp, but IE7 didn’t let me. I used to be able to copy and paste the ftp info into IE, then drag and drop. Not any more.

I’m on another computer now which still has Internet 6.0. It asked me yesterday if I wanted to install Internet 7.0. Of course I didn’t. The moral of the story: Never assume an “upgrade” from an internet giant is actually an upgrade.

Something cool I discovered the other day about IE7: it doesn’t recognize regular expressions the same as IE6 or FF. My password validator doesn’t work. Now I have to do it server side.
    NEAT! Thanks Microsoft!

Guys, I totally 100% wholeheartedly agree IE7 is the crappiest piece of software ever written. It hangs, takes ages to load eats memory. etc etc etc

It hung my machine 1 too many times… I now use Firefox. Way better. And this is comming from a senior Microsoft software developer.

Those guys in the IE dept at Microsoft need to be fired… and fast.

I agree with all the other comments. IE 7 is the worst version so far. It really is secure, you must understand that’s a very important quality.. Of course it is secure! It won’t even let me open a friggin PDF-file anymore… geeesss. I am so sick and tired of all this we-know-what’s-best-for-you-and-your-computer frenzy that’s going on.

IE 7 however had one quality feature.. I could uninstall it and go back to IE 6 – thank you!

hating IE 7, and from what I’ve seen of Vista hating it anymore
