How To Bypass Windows Password Protection

Posted Sep 24, 12:55

While browsing through YouTube, I found an old video of Kevin Rose explaining how to crack a Windows password. However, such an operation takes time, effort, and having certain tools (LiveCDs and the such), not to mention that it won’t work if you can’t boot from the machine’s CD drive for whatever reason (password-protected BIOS and the such).

I have found, however, a simple and effective way to bypass Windows’ password security without any additional tools or requirements. All you have to have is physical access to the machine. The method is as the following:

  • Reboot the machine
  • Wait until Windows starts loading, and then turn off the PC either by removing the power cable or (on some computers) by holding the power button down for a certain duration. It’s important that you do this while Windows is still loading.
  • Turn the machine on again. Windows should present you with a boot menu that includes the option to boot Windows into safe mode. Use the arrow keys to choose that option and click enter.
  • Windows will now boot in safe mode. When you see the login screen, there should be, next to all of your normal users, a new “Administrator” user. This user has no password, and has full access to the machine. Log into it.
  • Now you can use the control panel to either change your user’s password or add a new user. Have fun!

This does not work on every machine. Your average Dell might have a blank administrator password, but if the user is smart enough then a password will already be set. Also, you do not need to unplug the computer while booting to get to safe mode. You can get to the same menu by pressing F8 just before the Windows logo appears on bootup. One more thing to add you do not need to boot into safe mode to log on as administrator. On the log in screen that doesn’t show the administrator account you can press ctrl+alt+del twice and it will take you to the classic style log in screen and you can change the name to administrator and log in that way.

    1. Pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del twice doesn’t seem to bring you into the the classical login window under Windows XP Home Edition.
    2. The hidden administrator user isn’t an OEM thing. I have tried it successfully on 2 HP computer with OEM install and one other computer with a vanilla install, and it worked for all of them.
    3. The user account administration utility doesn’t show the administrator as a user.
    4. As for the F8 tip: I’ll look into it.

Anyone who hasn’t reset their admin password deserves to be “hacked”.

    control userpasswords2

Richy Freeway: So I made a mistake, big deal. I’m sure you’ve made a few in your life too. Your condescending attitude, however, is what makes turns you, from a polite corrector, as the previous commentor was, into a pompeous asshole.

Try better next time. And while you’re at it, you might want to look up the words “courtesy”, and “attitude”.

I have a somewhat similar problem with chard above.

“I mistakenly added one of my client computers as a member of a workstation which is not set up and doesnot exist and i restarted the system after saving the setting but i cant logon using the original username and password. It says i need to correct the username, password or enter the correct domain BUT it does not show the domain field at the logon screen anymore. The client was originally a member of a Domain with a user name and password and i also cant get a remote access to that client from any other computer or server in the domain. I’m assuming i’ve yanked it out of the domain into a workgroup that’s not set up properly and has no other members.

I’ve been researching but nothing yet. I’ve tried booting in “all safe modes” but it says “over frequency limit” or something like that. The computer runs windows XP.

    PLS HELP!!!

Grandson has XP Home, and had changed his password in a newly developed sense of independence. Unfortunately, he still has not fully grasped the concept of the importance of REMEMBERING the password after changing it. The machine has set idle for three weeks (I call it an object lesson!), and I was just about ready to purchase a third party software to do what you described here. You just saved me $35.00. Thank you very much.

disconnect your ram from your machine {for towers only} start your machine an error will show up and a beeping sound also… dont worry about that now turn your machine off now re-insert your ram now turn your machine back on press enter now that should get rid of that password ressetting it back to default

    re-setting admin login password

1 start your comp in safe mode

2 click yes on the dialog box

    3 click on start

    4 run

    5 type: control userpasswords2

6 in the dialog box click on administrator

7 reset password to what ever you want

8 thats it reboot and enter your new password

if you are able to acess cmd/command, use the NET USER command to change/reset a password without knowing it. for example, if i wanted to change an account with a username “kewlkid”, i would type

    NET USER kewlkid
    newpass
    newpass

you type newpass twice because you have to confirm new pass.

Ok, I have read all of your complaints and bullshit antics. Don’t throw your computer out the window or at any other object that will damage it. Short term gain, long term loss. What you can do is log onto a working computer that has a CD-RW drive and internet access. Download a program that is called OPHcrack. This download will be an ISO file. Then download a trial version of Nero and burn a bootable copy of the ISO file. Once the burn is done, then uninstall Nero so that the owner of that computer doesn’t have to do it later and return to the computer that you are locked out of. Have your computer boot from the CD rom drive with this disc in it. OPHcrack runs on its own and will crack your PW and any other PW that has been logged in the SAM file on the windows machine, regardless of PW complexity. KEEP the disc for later use if you so happen to need it again.

I have an old Compaq my son gave me, lost the password and cannot remember what it is.
Have spent days trying to figure out what it was and nothing.
The thing is I had some photos and also files, but the photos were very special and I want them back so bad and stupid me did not back anything up elsewhere.

So if anyone has come up with a sure fire way for me, to be able to reset the password or something. Please let me know, I dont know the model of the Compaq. My son said its an old laptop and that I probably would not be able to find parts for it, if needed. So here I am stuck, please someone help.
And by the way, yes I am stupid when it comes to computers as far as things like this, so you have to spell it out like to a child.

So I chose ‘remove password’ and that was it, the password was removed from the account that had it. Whala I rebooted and the computer started up with out a password prompt.

    So well done I say.

On my Daughter’s computer,(which was mine about 5 years ago) all we need to do to bypass the Windows password box (it’s the box with the user name field and the password field below) is press the RESET button on the front panel of the case. Windows starts again normally right on through to the Desktop!!! ((My Daughter hates this because her Sister-In-Law does this when she comes over to visit when she’s working and helps herself to any computer available in the house(I have 2 more, mine and my Son’s) without asking.))

I tried consulting Microsoft Knowledge Base with no results.

Anyway, has anyone out there tried this RESET switch?

I tried the foolproof method posted by jakeus. Had a computer picked up at a yard sale, and would come up to WXP sign-on screen both normal AND safe Mode with only one option, to put in the users password. So none of the various methods of trying ctrl-alt-del twice, or running control userpasswords from safe mode, etc would work.

BUT had an OPH Crack disc and booted from that. It found the password I needed and it worked. Got into WXP, ran control userpasswords and wiped out all previous users. Now have a great running machine!

    USE OPH CRACK!

A black box should appear, and in the box type: net user
this will find a list of all the accounts on the computer,
then type: net user * “user” “new password”
then restart you machine and then log on to ur computer, as doing this changes ur pass

Ok so heres how it works, when you first set up the computer you have to set up an accouynt to start with if you make this first one an admin account then you will not be presented with the “hidden” admin account when you enter safe mode.

yes Pressing F8 when the computer is starting up (i.e as soon as you’ve pressed the start button) will launch into Windows Advanced options, similar to the windows error recovery screen but with more options, such as VGA mode, safe mode with networking(network card enabled) etc.

i would advise that you don;t do what the tool who wrote the first caption said and unplug the power cable from your computer, if you do this it may or may not work when you try and turn it on again, this CAN but CAN fuck up your computer really badly.

best thing to do tbh is if you’ve lost your password and need to access your computer don’t be such a spack and just fucking remember it

or if it’s not your computer and you want to be a little fucking bastard then why the fuck are you looking for answers on a website that comes up as the second search result from google …........ honestly get some ingenuity and play about with the OS and find it yourself, this is the reason we have no great inventors in our time, everyone wants the answer handed to them…..

PS Windows Advanced options is built into all OEM and Branded machines that have windows loaded on them, if it has windows then its got Advanced otpions.

Unless your hard drive is shagged then you’ll not be able to access it.

Boot from a BART (or ERD commander) bootable disk.
Delete the SAM file in C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\
    Reboot the PC
Login to the machine’s “administrator” account – no (ie: blank) password will be required!!!!
If required, use User Manager to change the password of any machine accounts. Or, at a command prompt, type ” net user username * ” and follow the prompts to change the password for that account

Well, pretty much everyone leaving these messages knows not of what they’re saying. Listen, a guy from geek squad pressed a few keys on the keyboard to get to an alter4nate sign in screen which already had the password in the password space. People…does anyone know what those keys were???/

my baby momma (lol) who works for me thinks she is cute by setting a user password . I bypassed it by entering safe mode , the original administrator wasnt password protected. i removed all passwords . So now i created an account and gave it admin permission and password protected it . What i want to know is will she be able to find a way to lock me out? if she would password protect the original admin account ,would i still be able to use my admin account to change it? is there anything else i can do to asure that i can gain access to my computer in advance?

if you would like to email me direct its tommyhardhouse@yahoo.com – i appreciate any help and advice i can get. If you should email me direct please enter USER ACCOUNTS in the subject so i can find it if the spam folder grabs it

    thanks a million in advance!

Hey can anyone help me please, I am running windows xp media center edition when windows starts to load up i get a log on to windows box come up, when i have to enter my user name and password i have had the same user name and password for a long time now, but when i turned my laptop on today windows started to load up as normal the windows log on to box came up as normal but it didn’t have my user name already typed in witch it normally has, so i entered in my user name then my password but it keeps coming up with a logon message saying the system could not log you on, make sure your user name and domain are correct then type your password again. I have checked it all and it is correct but still can’t log on. Please help my email address is damian-griffin@hotmail.co.uk

    Hi,

It seems that all of the suggestions have a more or less 60% chance of working depending on the smartness of the IT guy you succeeded or on your bios settings. Anyway, here is my problem. The iT guy I replaced was sacked… He did not leave anything for me to start from… I have the routers, servers and workstations to break in to as of the moment…Plus he left the network set up in a mess much worse than spaghetti… Well, I managed to hack one of the on-site routers but now I am faced with cracking the server (running on Windows XP professional and one on Windows 2003 Server)... I’m planning to break it open using the Boot CD method. I know some if not all of you heard of already… Does that method really work? What are the possible damages I could encounter? I need a second opinion on this… I would really appreciate any respond…

    Thanks,

While browsing through YouTube, I found an old video of Kevin Rose explaining how to crack a Windows password. However, such an operation takes time, effort, and having certain tools (LiveCDs and the such), not to mention that it won’t work if you can’t boot from the machine’s CD drive for whatever reason (password-protected BIOS and the such).

I have found, however, a simple and effective way to bypass Windows’ password security without any additional tools or requirements. All you have to have is physical access to the machine. The method is as the following:

    Reboot the machine
Wait until Windows starts loading, and then turn off the PC either by removing the power cable or (on some computers) by holding the power button down for a certain duration. It’s important that you do this while Windows is still loading.
Turn the machine on again. Windows should present you with a boot menu that includes the option to boot Windows into safe mode. Use the arrow keys to choose that option and click enter.
Windows will now boot in safe mode. When you see the login screen, there should be, next to all of your normal users, a new “Administrator” user. This user has no password, and has full access to the machine. Log into it.
Now you can use the control panel to either change your user’s password or add a new user. Have fun!

First Posting, This actually works every time, I ofter wonder why the “NCSI or Criminal minds” need so long to get into a PW protected PC/Laptop.

Hi I am No IT wizz Kid by any long shot, just a simple Graphic Artist. It is a little tricky; but follow these instructions and you should be able to by pass any PC/laptop Password. Switch on PC, boot up and press F8 Key continuously, press safe mode, press enter, press again, (be Patient) after 2 minutes safe mode screen will open, press administrator, then press yes, now press start menu, and then go to and press control panel icon, now press user accounts, ignore administrator this time and press user name.? now press change password, type in your new password, now turn off and reboot as normal,

type in the new password. That should work.

wats up with you people. this will not work on most of your computers because the person who installed your windows already the password on it.
by turning of your computer while windows is loading you are messing up the operating system. you get into classic mode by pressing CTL+ALT+Delete 2 times in a row in windows xp professional or by pressing F8 just before the Windows logo appears on bootup. to take out the bios password on the older computers take out the button battery on the mother board while the computer is of and unplug your computer for about 1 min. then put the battery back in and plug your computer in and try it. you can also pull out your ram like one of the top posts said. i only use windows xp professional and have not tried to bypass the administrator password on any other operating system so i do not guarantee it will work on other operating systems.

Cracking is the old way and it is highly ineffective ,it might work on passwords which are just a few letters, but if you have mixed case, special characters and a space, you’ll sadly find out after days and days of waiting that it can’t be cracked.

The quick instant method is to find software to instantly remove and disable the password.

    Ladies & Gentlemen ….

    Righty ho ..

if you want to remove a password on any windows machine here is your best option.

if it has a cd drive download hirens 9.8 (google search its easy enough to find and i believe it is availible from www.thepiratebay.org)

this has password removal tools availible as well as many other good tools on it.

if the there is a BIOS password , wipe the cmos again google search will show you how to do this.

(i would explain im just very lazy by nature lol)

if you dont have a cd cdrive you can download an application for free to remove it then just put it on a floppy and boot .

if you dont have a floppy disk or a cd drive odds are its a new wave netbook in that case put the file on a U3 usb key

save you a hell of a lot of time.

or as stated above just use the admin in safe mode works on most computers :)

    god bless.

if you cant find the tools email me and i shall upload them to my site for you guys

    much love jon lee
