Here’s a quick summary of today’s town meeting . I’ll post updates from clubs on Friday.
Under our current hiring policy, the school board reviews and selects job applicants. Individual schools and students have little say in the process. In the past, CHS had a PTSO-like committee composed of parents, students, and staff who would review candidates.
The school board has good intentions. They’re aiming for increased diversity & transfer opportunity for current staff. Their policy applies to all the schools, not just CHS, but we’d like our voice back.
One suggestion is to ask the board for a list of qualified candidates for open positions. There will be a lunch meeting on the second floor ledge this coming Tuesday (the 17th). As always, everyone is welcome.
Good God, just don’t do it, OK? There are some very helpful folks going around refreshing older murals.
We had a good time this year, but there are some complaints. Doors were locked early. According to Dean Judy, this was not a staff decision. An overeager custodian started shutting people out.
This semester’s Multi Culti had more structure because of rampant substance abuse problems in the past. Several students complained that they were not involved in the planning process. As always, it is up to you to know what is happening in your school. There were messages in the forum bulletin for weeks, posters on the walls, posts on this website, and discussions in the halls. If decisions were made that you are unhappy with, you have only mostly yourself to blame.
For next year, we’d like to see more time to eat and wander, different activities, more trust, perhaps some performance art, and a rousing game of Dodgeball.
Since our librarians are not keeping the library open all day (they don’t have to, after all), we need parent volunteers. Even if it’s just an hour a week, and help would be greatly appreciated!
The district is having budget problems again. Fornero & the Board will have to make some cuts. This probably means an increase in Forum size (the current cap is around 19). There won’t be an increase in the current 7 class limit.
There’s too much graffiti. Also, we’re working on getting some recycling containers in the halls.
What’s up with Groups a Meetin’? Not much—they haven’t been implemented yet. Whether they should is still under discussion. According to an informal show of hands, most people believed that today’s town meeting (administered under the old style) was worthwhile.
