(Congratulations to Ani Kazanjian, Will Buckingham, and Andrew Sharp, our 2007 CRE graduates!)
The CRE program is ideal for previously home-schooled students who wish to transition back into the public schools and for students who wish to take control of their own education.
CRE students use the Community Resource program, which is housed at Community High School, to schedule all their classes. The Community Resource program offers all secondary students in the Ann Arbor school system an opportunity to earn credit toward graduation through a wide variety of courses at various locations, including universities throughout the area.
A CR course is a learning experience conducted by a member of the community either on site or in school as well as online classes. CR classes are designed to help students explore their community, enrich the curriculum, and meet individual needs. A certified AAPS teacher monitors each CR.
Students residing in the Ann Arbor Public School district complete an enrollment packet. Enrollment packets are available in the general office at Community High School. Students who do not reside in the Ann Arbor Public School district can be enrolled on a tuition basis. A CRE student and parent must sign the CRE Agreement Form. A student and/or parent would meet with a member of the CR department to discuss classes.
Classes available to CRE students would be any CRs that are being offered at CHS or other AAPS sites, online courses, classes at your geographic home school (PHS and HHS) and approved CRs. CR Course Plans would be completed for each CR class and submitted to the CR department by the given deadlines. Also, CRE students must enroll in the CRE Seminar class. This 0.25 credit class provides valuable information to the CRE student in the areas of academic planning, career planning, testing, resources, college guidance, and individualized planning.
Once a CR monitor receives a CR Course Plan, the monitor contacts the CR Instructor. The CR Monitor is checking to make sure the instructor is qualified, the instruction takes place in a safe environment and that the curriculum is appropriate. The CR Monitor also determines what type of credit and amount of credit that will be given.
The CR Monitor will contact the CR Instructor four times during the semester at each grading period. At each contact, the student will need to submit documentation showing their completed work. At the end of the semester, the CR Instructor competes a final evaluation form for the student and recommends a final grade. Students may choose between a letter grade and a pass/fail grade. The CR Monitor submits the final grade.
